HI-116-1 Conflict and Peace - Historical and Ethical Perspectives

The students shall have: - studied in depth and be able to answer questions of historical and ethical-philosophical character: What do we know about war? Why do they occur? How have wars been understood, communicated and recollected? What has man done to prevent war? Do fair wars exist? - learnt how to make competent use of the terms historical usage, remembrance, policies of historical remembrance and omission as well as comprehend why topics related to war and conflict may be both disputed and controversial - obtained basic insight into the ethics of conflict resolution with focus on terms like guilt, shame, forgiveness, responsibility and reconciliation - learnt how to write a term paper in history where they specialize in certain topics and work systematically and focused, as well as having discussed their own and their fellow students' papers in seminars.
The main focus will be on topics related to the period post 1900.
Lectures, seminars (two are compulsory), and tutorials.
An outline/draft (minimum 1 page) of the term paper must be submitted within a given date and approved. Students must participate with presentations, comments and term paper drafts at two compulsory seminars.
A term paper, about 10 pages (counts 70%) A 2-hour written examination (counts 30%) Graded assessment.
