HI-110-1 Europe and Norway 800-1750

Upon completion of the course the studentes shall have obtained a basic overview of political, economic, social and cultural development in Europe and Norway from about 800 to 1750, through the study of events, institutions and systems that have been of consequence for Norway, Europe and the world.

The course covers the period from the Middle Ages until 1750 and shows interaction and conflicts between various groups - royalty, aristocracy, clergy, civil cervants, the middle classes and peasants. Demographic development and its economic basis is emphasised. Topics: The development from feudalism to merchant capitalism, development of trades and urbanism, economic development in the Middle Ages, the agricultural crisis, the wars of religion, the great discoveries and exploitation of non-European regions. Changes in constitutions and institutions are central, both in autoctratic and representative forms of government.

Lectures

A preliminary test must be assessed as a Pass.

6-hour written examination. Graded assessment.
