ME-414 Philosophy of science, research methodologies, and the human dimension, 10 ECTS credits

After having completed the course, students will: be able to make use of knowledge on normal aging processes and (chosen) social-gerontological theories in critical discussions about the living conditions of elderly people, and have a broad overview of the factors that especially influence elderly people´s health and functional ability and insight into the challenges that these may cause be able to relate to and understand the elderly person´s experience of his/her situation have knowledge about and be able to plan measures to prevent the experience of helplessness, unwanted dependency, and powerlessness be able to contribute actively in the processing of reactions to grief and loss

Biological gerontology Age-related bodily changes Geriatrics Psychological gerontology and social gerontology Social-gerontological theories The health and functional ability of elderly people Complex and specific health challenges Self care - the elderly person as an active agent Experience of dependency an independency Coping, empowerment, and quality of life Reactions to grief and loss

Teaching will be given as lectures, seminars, and group work. Emphasis will be put on dialogue as well as the students´ own activity with the purpose of developing an analytical attitude where theory and practice are seen in the same context.

Individual written assignment (essay) with the course contents as starting point. The examination is graded. See the course brochure for more details.
