HEL400-A1 Foundations of Health Science

After having completed the course, students will: - possess in-depth insight into the theoretical foundation and basic values of health sciences as well as the historical and cultural foundation of the subject - be able to analyze and problematize the concept of health in an applied theoretical perspective - be able to analyze and problematize the concepts of health, disease and illnes from different theoretical and practical starting points - give an account of central topics and concepts in health science and their origin in the context of the history of ideas and culture and seen from their health professional perspective - be able to analyze the importance of sex, ethnicity, and culture in the health care services - be able to assess the importance of inter-sectoral cooperation and power relations in the health care services
In this course both theoretical and practical dimensions in health care sciences are considered. Central topics in health sciences will cover the context of the history of ideas and culture from where different health professional perspectives originate such as for instance the human body in the tension area between nature and culture. The concepts of health, disease and illnes will be analyzed and problematized and considered in relation to different goals for the health care services as for instance rehabilitation, habilitation, health promoting work and quality of life. Research into causes for health and unhealth is discussed. Conditions for inter-sectoral cooperation as well as relations regarding sex, professions, structure and power within the health care services are discussed. The construction and function of the health care services in a modern welfare state are focused on. Ethical questions related to the distribution and practice of health care services are emphasized. Central topics: - Sex/body/social circumstances - Lifestyle and change - Culture and ethnicity
Teaching will be given as lectures, seminars, and group work related to topics of current interest. Students are expected to contribute with presentations of literature from the reading list and articles.
The student must have passed compulsory group assignments and presentations. See the course brochure for a more detailed description.
The student must write an individual essay with one of the basic topics are starting point. The basic topic must be related to the everyday situation for the student as a health care worker. The essay is written as a home assignment with a duration of two days (48 hours). The examination is graded. See the course brochure for more criteria.
