HEL100 Public health - skills, ideas and ideology HEL102 Public health - community perspective

After having completed the course, the students will: possess in-depth knowledge about how the conditions relating to public health in general, and people´s life style in particular, are decided at national, regional and local level possess in-depth knowledge about the main participants in public health work in Norway; at national, regional and local level (various ministries, Norwegian Directorate of Health, National Institute of Public Health, county governors, local administration); that is organisational structure work methods tasks power and influence how the organisations may be influenced possess knowledge about attempts at changing people´s life style at population level possess knowledge about preparations of public documents (for instance white papers and reports) possess knowledge about laws and regulations like injunctions (drugs) and differentiated taxes (alcohol, tobacco, food) know about the influence from commercial forces (for instance food advertisement directed at children) possess knowledge about lobbying and influence on individuals, groups and non-governmental organisations

Public Health policy Organisation and management theories Law The influence of commercial forces on people´s life style Globalisation Land use planning and architecture´s influence on people´s life style The role of media Lobbying Examples of measures taken e.g. law against smoking, free fruit/food at school, organisation of physical activity, national campaigns

Lectures, group work and group exercises. Parts of the instruction will be compulsory. Details will be announced at the beginning of the semester.

Approved attendance A group requirement must be passed. Details are given in the course brochure.
