HEL100-1 Public health - skill, idea and ideology

Bachelor's Programme in Public Health Work

Learning outcomes: After having completed the course, students will have acquired basic knowledge skills and attitudes within public health work. Students will also have become familiar with various approaches to the concept of public health and acquired knowledge of significant public health problems, as well as strategies and theories for solving these problems. Focus will be placed on the person as individual and as participant at the group and societal level. Upon completion, students will have developed an understanding of factors which may either promotional or restrictive regarding their influence on public health.

The course contains the following topics:- historical and philosophical traditions within preventive and promotional health work- definitions and concepts: physical and mental health, disease, quality of life, empowerment, accessibility, user participation, well-being- viewpoints and scientific theory- factors influencing public health on an individualistic/societal level- public health: primary, secondary and tertiary prevention- laws and regulations, prominent national and international documents

Studies of literature, lectures, group work, supervision and seminars.

Portfolios which include two papers, one individual (counts 60% of final grade) and one group (counts 40%). Portfolios will be awarded differentiated marks. Please see the course description for more details regarding assignments and their formulation, contents and requirements. Dates for handing in written work is determined by the university.
