FRI106-1 Outdoor Activities. How to Use Nature in Children's Learning and Development.

The course will stimulate to outdoor activities. Through professional insight and experience students will, after having completed the course, be able to plan and carry out unorganised and organised outdoor activities for children.

Outdoor Activities concentrates on the following main areas: Nature and Man (15 credits) Ecology, insight into the most common biotopes and comparisons between them Forces in nature, processes of life and the basis for life on earth Man´s use and abuse of nature Way of perceiving nature, eco-philosophy, use of nature and understanding nature in Sami culture Adventures in nature, fieldwork and types of recreation, outdoor life at various seasons Nature as arena for recreation and health promoting activities Children, movement, nature (6 credits) Nature as a resource for children´s general growth and development Nature study, environment and outdoor life for children Use of natural materials and traditional games related to nature Joy, play and learning in various biotopes/areas at all times of year Exploring didactical activities and reflection upon personal practice related to the objectives Locality of kindergarten and school, and locality as arena for didactical and educational testing (9 credits) Children´s possibilities of overall growth in community Quality assurance with regard to locality and environment in kindergarten and school Security and risk factors with regard to outdoor environment Playground in nature Planning, implementing and evaluation of work with educational development Reflection upon personal activities in an overall didactic context Initiating, conducting, collaboration related to work concerning the above mentioned points

Teaching will vary between being theoretical and practical. During the study period students are grouped together in various ways related to contents and working methods. Course brochure will be handed out. Teaching is given as group work, excursions, practical work, lectures, project and problem-based learning. Compulsory teaching: Overnight excursions: Spring: A 4-day excursion to an area with forest and water Winter: A 4-day excursion to the mountains At start of summer: A 3-day excursion to the coastline Preparations for the excursions are compulsory. One-day excursions - trips to places near by Practical work in laboratory and in gymnasium/swimming-pool/fitness centre Project Preparations for practice, practice period and evaluation or project related to practice/didactical project Please refer to course brochure for dates/time for compulsory attendance. If a student is absent of various reasons, the student will have to participate at another time as long as the absence is not approved of by the teacher.

The examination consists of two parts. Counts 50 % each. Report from practice project Individual oral examination Graded mark.

Normally third year in Pre-School Education.
