FIL103-1 Classical Philosophy
Philosophy, One-year Programme

Upon completion of the course students shall have acquired good knowledge of the philosophy of Plato, Aristotle and Augustine´s philosophical thought, and be able to discuss similarities and differences between them. Students shall also be able to consider how themes first formulated in Classical antiquity, still dominate current thought within fields as ethics, philosophy and religion.
Classical philosophy has influenced western culture and tradition of thought up till recent days. The course introduces the thinking of Classical antiquity in general and includes in-depth study of three classical philosophers: Plato, Aristotle and Augustine. Central philosophical themes that are emphasised are ethics, cognitive theory and the philosophy of religion.
Lectures and seminars
One memo (2-5 pages) delivered within the stipulated dead-line must be assessed as a Pass. A draft must be discussed with the lecturer before submission.
4-hour written examination. Graded assessment.
