ET-401-1 Professional Ethics

The course presupposes that students have acquired basic ethical knowledge from having completed either a professional course of study or Examen philosoficum/Examen facultatum (With regard to students enrolled in the Master´s degree programme in Religion, it is required that they have ethical knowledge equivalent to that taught in REL104. Should a student be lacking these prerequisites, the course instructor may assign a reading list for this student in order to make up for this deficiency.)
Upon completion of the course, students will have achieved the following: - the ability to work with and analyse basic and subject-specific ethical questions and have the ability to understand and reflect upon - value-related changes and value-related plurality to the extent that this comprehension will be expressed in their professional practice - knowledge regarding central ethical discourses in our society as well as their ideological- historical origins - the ability to engage in ethical reflection and argumentation
The course focuses on general ethics in connection with the topics concerning welfare and social change that were discussed in previously completed obligatory courses, continuing the discussion surrounding a series of basic ethical questions, for example the relationship between reality comprehension and ethics, ethics as philosophical ethics as well as general ethics. Students will also become acquainted with various ethical perspectives, such as deontological ethics, utilitarianism, ethical virtues, discursive ethics and phenomenological ethics, including ethical perspectives from non-western philosophical traditions. Questions regarding ethics´ contextual dependency versus a possible universality will be discussed. Empirical studies regarding how people think and act in an ethical manner will be introduced, including the relationship between theoretical ethics and sociology. Students will also become familiar with ethical analytical tools and practice ethical argumentation, emphasizing making the connection between basic ethics and the challenges posed by the practical arena.
Instruction will normally include lectures and dialogues, including student-based presentations.
One oral presentation and one prepared set of comments in response to a separate presentation are requirements for being allowed to sit the final examination. Presentations may be made on an individual or group basis.
One six-hour individual written examination. Graded assessment
The course is open to external candidates. Their assessment form includes a six-hour individual written examination with subsequent oral examination, the latter of which may adjust their final grade.
