ET-400-1 General Ethics

The course presupposes that students have acquired basic ethical knowledge from having completed either a professional course of study or Examen philosoficum/Examen faccultatum (With regard to students enrolled in the Master´s degree programme in Religion, it is required that they have ethical knowledge equivalent to that taught in REL104. Should a student be lacking these prerequisites, the course instructor may assign a reading list for this student in order to make up for this deficiency.)
Upon completion of the course, students will have achieved the following: knowledge regarding central concepts surrounding professional ethics the ability to identify and analyse ethical challenges arising in professional practice the ability to use their newfound knowledge in order to reflect upon their chosen profession and professional practice
This course focuses on the professionally related ethical sides of challenges and issues connected with welfare and social change introduced in previously completed obligatory courses, continuing on to comprise central questions connected with professions and ethics. The course will thus treat professions´ growth, emphasizing their value-related basis, autonomy and relationship with society. Students will discuss the function of ethics - in part as guiding principles in practice and in part as a protective capacity for service recipients and finally, as supportive of professional growth. Central topics include: growth of professions and professional ethics, emphasizing change professional ethics´ normative basis various perspectives on professions and professional ethics´ function in society, including non-western societies responsibility for providing notification to the proper authorities relationship between profession and professional ethics professional ethics as silent knowledge in professional understanding professional ethics expressed in legal codes relationship between professional and private values relationship between professional ethics and economy relationship between professional ethics and the law
Instruction will normally include lectures and dialogues, including student-based presentations.
One oral presentation and one prepared set of comments in response to a separate presentation are requirements for being allowed to sit the final examination. Presentations may be made on an individual or group basis.
6-hour individual written exam. Graded assessment.
The course is open to external candidates. A written reflection paper must receive approval in order for the student to be allowed to sit the final examination, upon which the student will be assessed in accordance with their sitting a six-hour individual written examination.
