EN-419-1 Language Variation through Time and Space
Autumn
EN-410 and EN-411 must be passed or taken the same semester
Learning outcomes On successful completion of the course, students will be able to - describe and discuss language variation from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective - understand the mechanisms of and reasons for language variation - analyze and compare language samples of different geographical, social and/or historical origin
The aim of this seminar is to familiarize students with language variation from a synchronic perspective, on the basis of an examination of different sociolects, dialects and varieties of English around the world; and from a diachronic perspective, where we will be focusing on how and why languages change. We will pay attention to linguistic approaches and theories that seek to describe and explain language variation; and special emphasis will be placed on variation and variational change pertaining to the language system. In addition, general aspects of synchronic and diachronic variation, such as the mechanisms of and reasons for language variation, will be discussed.
