EN-417-1 English Linguistics: Natural Language Acquisition
Spring
English
Students will - have acquired knowledge of the principles of natural language acquisition - have gained and expanded knowledge of competing theories of language and language acquisition - developed a clear understanding of the relationship between first and second language acquisition
This course is primarily concerned with natural, i.e. uninstructed language acquisition. Thus, in the first part of the course, the focus is on first language acquisition with special emphasis being placed on the biological, cognitive, and social-interactive foundations of language acquisition, the individual stages of language acquisition as well as with impaired language acquisition. The second part of the course deals with the relation between first language acquisition and the acquisition of a second language both through communication in naturally occurring situations and through institutionalized instruction.
