EN-414-1 The Marlowe Moment

EN-410 and EN-411 (or the equivalent) must have been passed or must be completed in the same semester.

Upon having completed the course the students -are expected to be able to account for the development of Early Modern English drama after 1585, which resulted in the original and influential drama of William Shakespeare (1564-1616) -should know the various genres and their characteristics -should be able to account for how the texts are aimed at different social classes and kinds of spectators, and readers, ranging from court and aristocratic circles via the new middle classes hin manufacture and commerce to artisans, apprentices and workers.

Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593) is recognised as a major innovator of the English Renaissance stage with regard to dramatic forms and dramatic speech. The course examines the extent to which the playwright´s highly popular and experimental plays may be said to have influenced the Early Modern English stage and changed the role of the author. Moreover, the course positions the play texts within a wider Renaissance context, represented by cultural movements on the Continent.

Seminars. Selected films and tv-series will be shown at appropriate times outside class hours.

Both a short oral presentation and an obligatory essay written under supervision must be assessed as a Pass in order for the student to take the final examination in the course. Contact the teacher for further information.
