EN-209-1 Pragmatics

Learning outcomes On successful completion of the course, students will be able to - define and describe pragmatics in relation to other (linguistic) disciplines - explain central concepts in pragmatics (e.g. reference, proposition, inference, implicature) - understand how speakers achieve their goals in verbal interaction - illustrate the ways in which meaning is shaped by contextual factors (e.g. speakers, speakers' beliefs, intentions, plans and acts, spatial, temporal and socio-cultural settings) - apply the key features of speech act theory, conversational maxims and conversational interaction in analysis

This course introduces students to the field of pragmatics, which is concerned with the study of language in context and the shaping of meaning by contextual factors, such as language users, their goals, beliefs and acts; the socio-cultural setting of verbal interaction, etc. Topics to be covered include reference, proposition, inference, speech acts, conversational maxims, politeness and turn taking.

Two obligatory assignments must be assessed as a Pass.
