EN-203-1 The Literature and Culture of the Victorian Period

One-year programme in English (60 ECTS credits) or the equivalent, EN-103 and EN-104 or the equivalent must be successfully completed.
After completing the course students should: - have a comprehensive insight into Victorian ideas about society, values, attitudes and conflicts - be able to analyse and compare different nineteenth-century texts, including images of art and architecture
The course aims to provide knowledge of attitudes to change and progress in Victorian times in Britain. The main focus is on three controversial issues of that period: a) industrialism, b) values, and c) science and religion. The reading consists of poetry, novels, extracts from speeches, pictures and video programmes dealing with contemporary issues, art and architecture.
Lectures and seminars.
A compulsory essay must be assessed as a Pass.
4-hour written examination. Graded assessment.
