EN-121-1 English Grammar and Practical Usage
Bachelor's Programme in English , English, One-year Programme
Autumn
English
By the end of the course students shall be able to give an account of the basic structures of English morphology and syntax. In addition they shall be able to describe contrastive grammatical features in English and Norwegian. As for practical language skills, students shall be able to recognise central translation principles and have become acquainted with important contrastive aspects for Norwegians in the the English language.
The grammar part of the course comprises an introduction to English syntax, in which English and Norwegian syntax will be compared in order to increase students´ awareness of the differences between the two languages. Practical usage deals with a selection of contrastive differences between Norwegian and English and focuses on the grammatical errors that are typical for Norwegian users of English. Apart from providing an introduction to grammatical theory, the course gives students the opportunity of working with the language, with particular emphasis on practical language skills.
Lectures and seminars. Individual supervision in connection with the seminars. There is an 80% attendance requirement at seminars.
Each semester 2 assignments in grammar and 2 assignments in translation must be assessed as a Pass and attendance at compulsory seminar groups must be approved. Further information will be given by the teacher.
A 6-hour written examination in the spring semester. Graded assessment. Both the grammar part and the usage part must be assessed as a Pass.
