EN-109-1 Didactics of English in the in the Postgraduate Certificate in Education, one subject only

At the completion of this course students shall: - Be able to teach English from 5th grade in primary school, through lower secondary up to and including secondary level - Have acquired insight into theories on foreign language learning, and on the teaching of literature and culture studies - Have acquired insight into the various aspects of English as a school subject: knowledge, skills, communication and experience - Show evidence of didactic reflection when planning, implementing and assessing their English teaching - Be able to teach English by means of a variety of methods - Be able to convey English language literature and knowledge of English speaking cultures to pupils at different proficiency levels - Be able to assess and give constructive feedback on the pupils´ learning efforts
Theory, experience and practice are combined to give students an understanding of the different aspects of the subject, knowledge, skills, communication and experience, as well as introducing them to the art of communicating literature and culture to pupils.
The course consists of approximately 60 hours of instruction, normally scheduled as 4 weekly hours in periods over 2 semesters. Lectures, seminars, student presentations and practical exercises. The uses of ICT are an integrated part of the course work. In connection with the term papers (see below) an extended syllabus must be approved. See separate curriculum for teaching practice.
- The teaching practice must be assessed as a Pass - An oral presentation given to fellow students must be assessed as a Pass.
Two individual research-based term papers (about 10 pages) on different themes count 70% A 5-hour written examination - alternatively, an oral examination - counts 30% Students will be given notice of the examination form no later than two months before the final examination. Differentiated grades.
