After completing the course the student should: understand how to build a computer network be able to compare and evaluate the different components of a computer network be able to install and use the most common network operating systems
This course is should be seen in context with DAT 217 which will be a continuation of this course. Introduction to and practical experience of design, planning, installation, configuration and support of networks. Backup and planning of backup. Components in the network such as switches, hubs, routers, cables and hardware as used in networks, with a focus on components used in servers. Introduction and configuration of the most common operating systems used in networks (Linux, Novell Netware, Windows). Installation, administration and use of these systems.
Lectures, laboratory exercises and project work that counts as part of the exam. The exercises take place in the computer laboratory on customized computers with specialized hardware and software. A laboratory engineer, student assistant and/or course lecturer is present. The students get training in development and use of professional software and hardware. The classes are split into groups of suitable sizes so that all students get access to necessary equipment and the help they need to solve the exercises. Some of the exercises involve group work. The students should also take apart and build up different network systems.
Students must pass compulsory assignments in order to take the examination. A survey of the compulsory assignments will be given in Fronter by the start of the semester.
A project, contributes 25 % to the final mark. 3-hour written examination contributes 75 % to the final mark. Graded assessment.
