BYG300-G Research Project, Civil Engineering
Civil Engineering, Bachelor Programme , 2-year Programme in Civil Engineering, 2-year Programme
Spring
Students may use English or Norwegian in their examinations.
A prerequisite for admission to the course entitled Research Project is to have passed the necessary examinations with regard to full-time academic progression. Students who lack up to 30 study points at the beginning of the term during which the Research Project will be carried out may apply for exemption from this requirement, a prerequisite of which is that the student not lack the necessary technical coursework upon which the Research Project is based.
After completing the course, the student is expected to have: gained experience in carrying out a larger project work within the civil engineering field including planning and specification of the project gained experience in writing a larger project report including search of relevant sources and references to those sources that have been applied showed capability to apply knowledge and skills acquired previous in the study programme solved a definite engineering approach within the civil engineering field on a satisfying way or have identified problems that has to be worked with further to find a solution
The first part (5 ECTS credits) consists of a pre-project where the task and approach are chosen by students under supervision. The pre-project should be chosen as a prerequisite of the research project. The second part (15 ECTS credits) is the research project which is to develop experience and skills in the technical subject, as well as in independent and cooperative methods of working. The majority of the projects are industry related. In cooperating with professionals outside the university environment the students obtain valuable knowledge for their future career. On campus projects, usually experimental, require the students to develop a certain research experience and competence. Topics are usually collected or generated by the faculty. The students may suggest their own topic which is then subject to faculty approval.
Independent group work (2-4 students), organised with group supervision approximately 2 hour per week.
Project report carried out in group, with adjustable oral project presentation. Graded assessment. The assessment given on the project report may be adjusted maximum one grade up/down. The project presentation may give grounds for individual adjustment of the assessment given on the project report.
