BYG205-G Foundation Engineering

After completing the course, the student is expected to: evaluate the requirement for investigations for foundations in deposits carry out simple field investigations and laboratory experiments make simple stability calculations in brick walls and foundation calculate settlings

An introduction to the origin, anatomy and properties of soils, and also soil mechanics. Theory is applied to approach questions regarding foundation; tension, response, stability, carrying capacity, settings and flow of subsoil water.

Lectures 2 hours per week and exercises with practical work in laboratory and field 2 hours per week. Compulsory participation in the laboratory work that is carried out in groups with 3-4 students. Each group delivers a mutual report.

Satisfactory submission of compulsory exercises and compulsory participation on the laboratory work.

Written examination, 3 hours (60 % contribution to final asssessment) and portfolio with laboratory reports (40 % contribution to final assessment). Graded assessment. The portfolio must be assessed to Pass to take the written examination. The candidate may be examined orally with regards to the portfolio. The examination may give basis for individual assessment also on the group work.
