BYG101-G Technical Design

After completing the course, the student is expected to: have fundamental knowledge and skills in analytical and creative processes related to product development and design understand and be able to describe the properties of the main building materials understand fundamental calculations on the properties on the main building materials
An introduction to theory of design, and the properties of the most important building materials. Through lectures and projects, students obtain fundamental knowledge and skills in analytical and creative processes related to product development. Different drawing techniques and virtual and physical prototyping are some of the tools used to develop skills. Knowledge on building materials are also obtained through lectures, demonstrations and a comprehensive training programme in the laboratory. Attention is paid to material composition and behaviour, such as strength and deformation properties.
Lectures 2 hours per week, design laboratory and design lectures 4 hours per week in groups and exercises/laboratory work 2 hours per week in groups.
Students must pass the compulsory assignment(s) in order to take the examination.
Written examination, 4 hours (50 % contribution to final assessment and portfolio with project work (individual and in group, 50 % contribution to final assessment. Graded assessment. The portfolio must be assessed to Pass to take the written examination. The candidate may be examined orally with regards to the portfolio. The examination may give basis for individual assessment also on the group work.
