The student will after completion of the course: Have extensive knowledge of a particular animal species, its behaviour, anatomy, physiology, and reproduction Have knowledge of the natural habitat of this species Know the requirements of this species concerning keeping it in captivity Know some common diseases of the species Take part in the necropsy of an animal
The principles of keeping animals in captivity. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, nutrition and behaviour of a selected species. Learn how the animal can be kept as close to the conditions in its natural habitat as possible. Indicators of stress, disease and malnourishment. How should the exhibit be formed? Etics and welfare of animals in captivity.
Instruction is comprised of lectures, seminars, tutorials and project study. Practical work and observation for the supervised project in Kristiansand Zoo comprise a major part of the course and will be time registered. A compulsory project report is written. The report will be evaluated and approved. The student will give two compulsory oral presentations on his/her project for the other students.
Required time for project work and attendance in compulsory class lectures/seminars.
Group or individual oral project presentation (counts 40%) and a written project report (counts 60%). Both the oral presentation and the written report must be approved for the student to pass. No differentiated grades.
