After having completed the course the student is expected to posess knowledge about cell biology, cell anatomy and fundamental prosesses in the cell. be able to explain the characteristics and morphology of certain categories of animals and plants. posess knowledge about selected ecosystems, their abiotic and biotic factors and the consequences of human impact on the ecosystems understand the hereditary mechanisms and processes in the duplication and reproduction of cells and the source of genetic variation posess knowledge about the principles and techniques in DNA technology and its use in medicine, agriculture, forensic and phylogenetic science. understand evolution and the principles behind evolutionary theory and posess knowledge about the evolution of the human being. be able to organise, carry out and substantiate both practical and theoretical teaching.

Interaction between a basic but substantial knowledge of selected subjects in biology and practical work connected to these subjects. The course is part of a broader basis for teaching natural sciences in primary and lower secondary school. The subjects are: Cellbiology; anatomy of the cell, respiration and photosynthesis. Introduction to botanical and zoological systematics; main features and characteristics of some essential groups. Biotic and abiotic factors and interactions in some common ecosystems. The human impact on ecosystems. Genetics and biotechnology. Evolution; the fundamentals of the theory.

The teaching is carried out as lectures, laboratory exercises and field work. Students are required to participate actively in the laboratory exercises and field work and submit compulsory reports.

Approved practice period and student field work. Mandatory participation in field work and lab work.

A 4-hour written exam. Graded marks.

Theoretical and practical.

Half-year programme.

Third or fourth year in teacher education.
