In the last semester of study towards the Master of Science Degree in Economics and Business Administration, the students have to write a Master's Thesis, counting 30 ECTS credits. Through this work it is expected that the student has learned to make use of scientific methods to analyse a specific topic, preferrably within the chosed spesialisation of study. The topic may be selected by the student, or it may be suggested by business contacts or lecturers. The student has to formulate the final problem to be investigated, assisted by the assigned adviser. Due to the fact that the thesis completes the study towards the Master of Science Degree, it will be based on subjects taken in economics and business administration. Emphasis is on explisit connection between theory and empirical data and therefore the thesis has to include analytical and empirical investigation of aspects related to the chosen topic. The students have to follow the guidelines given for god research and report writing. The Master's Thesis is a visible product of successful completion of the degree programme. It is .... to show the candidates ability to carry out a major independent research task, and in many cases it may be a positive contribution when one applies for a job.
The Master's thesis aims at teaching students how they can apply scientific methods to a specific problem. The thesis should be based on a problem that is relevant to business administration. It must include either an analytical approach or an empirical investigation of aspects of the problem. Importance is attached to an explicit connection between theory and empiricism. Administrative arrangements/guidelines have been worked out for various details concerning the duration, scope, working methods, selected syllabus, counselling and deadlines of the master thesis. The guidelines can be obtained from the School of University of Agder.
