Completion of general upper-secondary education. Upon admission students must provide a (police) certificate of good conduct.

In addition to having completed general upper secondary schooling, it is expected that students will be able to work with an English syllabus and have basic computer skills, both for writing assignments and acquiring information from the Internet.

The programme is in line with the National Framework for Social Work Education. It is interdisciplinary and combines traditional academic subject areas with subjects related to the social work profession. Included in the programme is a work placement lasting one semester (18 weeks). See the course description for SO-300 for further details. Detailed lecture plans are handed out at the semester's start and may be obtained in person from the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences.

The Bachelor's Degree Programme in Social Work is a general education in social work. It aims at educating user-oriented professionals who are qualified to prevent, solve and reduce social problems. The programme will provide knowledge of the societal factors that create and maintain social problems and the various methods used within social work.

Proficiency training and fieldwork are an integral part of some courses. There may also be Internet instruction in parts of certain courses. While there is no compulsory attendance at most lectures, there are certain parts of the courses that are, for example proficiency training and fieldwork instruction. During the third academic year there is a semester-long work placement. Language of instruction is Norwegian.

There is an examination in each course. Assessment forms will vary between individual in-school exams, at-home exams, oral exams and group project work. See the individual course description.

There is the possibility of going on exchange. Student exchange agreements have been arranged with academic institutions in the other Nordic countries, Australia, Lithuania, UK and the United States (please see the International Education Office web-pages for detailed information)

Students must have completed all courses in the first and second year of study, before they start their third year of study.

The programme prepares students for careers in social services, child welfare services, hospitals, as well as organisations and institutions in rehabilitative counselling, psychiatric health care/treatment, family counselling and educational and psychological counselling services. The programme qualifies the graduate for further higher education, for example the University's own programme offerings, master in Welfare studies.

Successful completion of the programme awards the graduate with the degree Bachelor of Social Work
