Higher Education Entrance Qualification

The programme consists of at least 90 ECTS credits in history, of which at least 30 credits must be on level 2, as well as Ex.Phil. and Ex.Fac. (20 ECTS credits), one elective course (10 ECTS credits) and a minor subject of 60 ECTS credits (see course structure). During the first year two overview courses and at least one specialization course will be given each semester. In the third semester three advanced courses will be offered.

Upon completion of the programme students will - be trained in critical and holistic thinking pertaining to past, present and future social conditions - have acquired knowledge of how past conditions contributes to understanding the society we are a part of, be it on a local as well as a national or international basis - have acquired an understanding of the history of the western as well as the non-western world. In a time with close international relations this becomes increasingly important. - acquired insight into the method and theory of history

Variation of instruction is emphasized throughout the programme. Lectures and seminars will be supplemented with tutorials in connection with the term paper, group work, colloquiums and self-tuition.

Forms of assessment are written examination, home-examination, oral examination and term paper / portfolio.

During the third semester it is possible to study abroad at one of the institutions with which the University of Agder has an exchange agreement.

The study of history is a useful background for teaching and social analysis in the public as well as the private sector. It is well suited as a first degree for students who plan to become teachers, researchers or journalists or work in publishing, the culture sector or national and international organisations. With a view to teaching, students are recommended to study an additional school subject in the third year. If combined with Postgraduate Certificate in Education it qualifies for teaching in upper secondary school and the 5th to 10th grades in compulsory school. Upon completion of the Bachelor degree, students may be admitted to the Master Programme in History. Consult the relevant information.

Students who choose to take Examen Philosophicum and Examen Facultatum at Lesbos have to contact the student adviser inorder to adjust the education plan.
