Higher Education Entrance Qualification
English from upper secondary school or the equivalent
The programme gives a broad knowledge of English language, literature and culture, with emphasis on British and American culture. The advanced courses offers specialization within language, literature and culture.
On completion of the programme students are expected to - have acquired a broad knowledge of the English language and its various forms of expression - be able to show insight into English literature and culture - be familiar with literary genres and epochs - show insight into cultural aspects, mainly by studying, analysing and discussing different texts - master English grammar and usage in practical contexts
Through contact hours and group work students are expected to improve their English skills and further develop their analytical capabilities, and through self-study improve their ability to work independently. Students are expected to participate actively and to give oral presentations and submit written work, facilitated by the course instructor. Compulsory attendance (minimum 80%) will be required for parts of the courses (see course descriptions).
Forms of assessment will vary.
Students may spend one semester at a university with which the University of Agder has an agreement, either in Europe, the USA, Canada or Australia. The study abroad semester may be taken as an alternative to the advanced courses (level 2). Contact the department for further information.
Students must have successfully completed courses in English representing 60 ECTS credits to be allowed to proceed with advanced courses (level 2).
Graduates may find a profession in teaching (in combination with Postgraduate Certificate in Education), mass media, culture work, public relations, tourism, executive work in the public and private sectors, publishing, or international and intercultural work. The programme qualifies for admission to the Master's Programme in English at the University of Agder.
Through cooperation with the Norwegian Study Centre at the University of York, England, a two weeks´ stay is integrated in the programme in the spring. Students must bear all costs themselves; however, they may apply to the Educational Loan Fund for an additional loan. Further information will be given during the autumn semester. See the course description for EN-002-1. Students who choose to take Examen Philosophicum and Examen Facultatum at Lesbos have to contact the student adviser in order to adjust the education plan.
