Guide to ECTS course catalogue

This guide is in English, but this does not mean that our study programmes and course units are offered in English. On the contrary, most of the instruction is given in Norwegian. If you do not know Norwegian but still want to be admitted to the University of Agder, please check carefully that the programme or course units that you want to attend are actually offered in English (please see below).

The 2010-2011 ECTS course catalogue contains information which is valid for this academic year. It offers information in the following main sections:

  • University of Agder (including university regulations)
  • Study programmes and course descriptions
  • General practical information
  • Additional information for incoming exchange students
  • International Education Office
  • Courses taught in English

Links to useful information on education in Norway, the twin counties of Agder and a film presentation are included as well.

The information on the institution is intended to give a quick overview of the University of Agder, including contact addresses, academic calendar, authorities and administrative procedures and regulations. The course catalogue contains comments on the study programmes as a whole sorted by faculty. Study programme descriptions contain an overview of all course units (modules) which make up the programme. All students within a normal study plan will find this type of overview for their class. The course descriptions are also indexed by course title or course code. The course descriptions cover first-year subjects for students commencing studies autumn 2010, second year courses for students who commenced studies autumn 2009, etc. Some new study programmes are being offered from autumn 2010. In the academic year 2010-11, teaching will be given in courses contained in the first year of the new study programmes and the first and second year of degree programmes offered for the first time in 2009-10. Not all study programmes and courses outlined in the catalogue will be offered every year.

The University of Agder offers several English-taught Master’s programmes. To see these, please click here.

The University of Agder reserves the right to adjust the courses offered during the course of the academic year and is not responsible for typing errors or printing mistakes. If and when such errors/mistakes occur, they will be published by the faculty involved.

Course descriptions
The course descriptions contain information about the number of credits (based on student workload), prerequisites, objective in some cases also learning outcomes, course contents, year of study, mode and language of instruction, evaluation methods etc. Course literature is not usually listed in the course descriptions. This information is given at the beginning of the semester or is available on request.
It should be noted that all credits used in the course descriptions and course diagrams are ECTS credits allocated in accordance with the ECTS guidelines.
Where a prerequisite is listed, this is defined as a passed exam in the courses listed as prerequisites. Recommended previous knowledge means that the course builds on material given in the prerequisites or general descriptions of knowledge or competencies, but passed exams are not required. In general, it is assumed that students will follow the progression of the study programme even though this is not specified in every individual course description.
Sections about evaluation methods contain information both about examination requirements, i.e. requirements to be met in order to take the exam, and the type of evaluation on which the grade will be based. Examination requirements are usually various types of student work within the relevant course.

Credits and grades
Unless otherwise stated in the course descriptions, the grades A-F are used (ECTS grading scale). For more information on ECTS credits and the grading scale, please see information given under “University of Agder” in the ECTS course catalogue.
