Norwegian ID number

A Norwegian ID number is not necessary if you are staying in Norway for less than 1 year, and it is not possible for you to acquire a Norwegian number if you are here for 6 months or less. However, if you wil be in Norway for more than 6 months, you may want to consider applying for a Norwegian ID number.

The advantages of a Norwegian ID number are that with this you can be assigned a regular doctor and you will be able to open a bank account. All "quota" students must apply for an ID number, and it is advisable that all degree-seeking students do so. For full-year exchange students, this is optional. If you are staying less than 6 months but would still like to open a bank account, you can apply for a "D-number" (a dummy number), see below.

Students staying in Norway for more than 6 months:

After receiving a residence permit, you can apply for a Norwegian ID number at the National Population Register. The form

acts as an application, but you must appear in person to apply. The National Registry normally processes applications within two weeks. The visiting address in Kristiansand is: Folkeregisteret, Tordenskjoldsgate 65.

Opening hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday: Usually 08.30-15.00, Thursday: 08.30-17.00. Saturdays: closed.

Students staying in Norway for less than 6 months:

You will not be eligible for an ID number. If you need a bank account, you can apply for a "D- number," a simplified version of the national ID number. You can do this at the tax office, Tordenskjoldsgate 65. After you receive the "D-number" you can go to any bank and open an account.
