Extension of residence permit and work permit
Applications for a new residence permit must be submitted personally to the local police station. In Kristiansand they are located in Tollbodgata 45, in Grimstad they are located in Storgata 3. The application should be handed in at least one month before expiry of the present permit. A study progress report must be submitted with the application.
Extension is normally given for one year, or to the planned date for termination of studies if less than one year. Residence permits are not extended beyond the expiry date of the candidate's passport. Financing and housing must be documented.
Please note that you have to pay a fee of NOK 1100,-for the renewal of your residence permit.

When applying for a renewal of the student work permit you need to enclose a statement from your educational provider that the work is not considered to interfere with your studies.
Students are automatically granted a part-time work permit along with the first-time residence permit. The permit allows you to work up to 20 hours per week during the semester and full time between semesters. You do not have to pay a separate fee for a work permit, nor do you need to have an employment contract.
Please note that part-time work and holiday jobs are hard to find. Students should therefore not plan to partially fund their studies at UiA by working part-time.
Everyone who works in Norway must have a tax deduction card. You hand in your tax deduction card to your employer. The tax deduction card shows how much tax your employer must deduct before paying wages. To obtain a tax deduction card, you must visit the local tax assessment office (Tordenskjoldsgt. 65). You need to bring with you:
- A valid passport
- Residence or work permit
- Your employment contract (with your Norwegian employer)
- Your Norwegian D-number or your personal identification number (ID - number)
