Research ethics at UiA

The university's contribution to national and international research depends on responsible, ethical conduct within its academic community.

Plenen

UiA's research must be distinguished by four basic values:

Transparency

Transparency is the best way to prevent dishonesty in research. Therefore no part of any research activity is to be consciously concealed, except when there are good and generally accepted reasons for confidentiality.

Trust

Research, like all other human interactions, is based on trust. Everyone must be able to trust their colleagues and their superiors.

Responsibility

All research involves being responsible for ensuring that knowledge is not misused and that it is beneficial to society.

Respect

Everyone involved in, and affected by, research is entitled to respect from others. All employees must respect their colleagues' research, both within their own research areas and in areas unfamiliar to them.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Some of this information is only available in Norwegian. Please be sure to understand the duties and rights involved, according to Norwegian laws and regulations. Also note that UiA has guidelines relating to scientific misconduct.

  • Read about the right to privacy here.
  • EU FP7 has a separate set of ethical guidelines. You can find the checklist and supporting documents here.
  • Vancouver-guidelines - Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts. Those guidelines were developed from medical journals, but are now also applied to other scientific areas.

Ethical Guidelines for the University of Agder

The university also has general ethical guidelines, but they are only available in Norwegian.
