Language courses

Most Norwegians speak English, but knowing Norwegian helps a lot in everyday life. If you are planning to work in Norway for an extended period of time, it will be necessary for you to learn the language. Most employers demand that you should be able to follow discussions and attend meetings in Norwegian after 2-3 years.

Norwegian courses

UiA staff members may enrol in courses at Kongsgård Skolesenter (Kristiansand) or at Kvalifiseringstjenesten (Grimstad). They provide Norwegian courses at different levels.

The Centre for Educational Research and Development (PULS) at UiA covers the course fees for scientific staff members. Those willing to participate should contact the Office Manager Ragnhild Lager at PULS in order to get the course fees refunded.

Please note that the course fees for spouse or other family members will not be covered by UiA. Staff members should enrol in the evening classes (unless otherwise agreed) so that this does not affect their daily work at UiA. It is important to enrol as early as possibly in order to get a place on the course.

Other courses provided by PULS

PULS also offers a variety of other courses for scientific staff members. One of the courses is academic English. Contents of the course include topics like how to present a paper in English, or how to address the audience. Courses in academic English are offered both in Kristiansand and Grimstad every semester.

There are also courses in various other subjects, for instance:

  • university pedagogics
  • ICT-supported teaching
  • e-teaching
  • elocution and body language

"Pulsebua" is a place where you can learn more about technical skills, for instance use of the electronic whiteboard. Pulsebua is run by Birgitte Wergeland.

PULS also offers online courses in study strategy and essay writing.
