The Department of Music has a strong team of expert performers and researchers in the field of African-American Music. Music education is offered in a broad range of disciplines with a focus on both innovative and traditional forms of expression in the field of African-American music. We offer study programmes for creative performing musicians, composers, music technologists and music educators.

Through their studies, the students reach a high level of performance in their chosen instrument/voice. The programmes provide the students with a platform for personal and artistic development that allows the students to reach high levels of music performance and develop creative and independent ways of working with music.

A deliberate emphasis on music technology provides many interesting interdisciplinary connections between technology and music related to music performance, production and mediation, studio technology and multimedia production.

A music performance degree in African-American music from the University of Agder may open up numerous career opportunities as a freelance artists and permanent employment.
