PhD Forum

As part of the training, the PhD student should hold seminars or lectures and in such a way be trained and provided with assistance in dissemination of research results (according to point 4.2 in the Regulations for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) at the University of Agder). For the PhD programme in technology at the Faculty of Engineering and Science these seminars/lectures are called "PhD Forum".

Approximately ten times each year, starting in 2009 with five each year, we arrange "PhD Forum" for the PhD students and supervisors, and the faculty moreover. At each PhD Forum some PhD students make presentations, and if possible, these are from different research groups.

In the PhD Forums the PhD students, first outline their research topic in a 20-minute presentation, after which approximately 10 minutes are given for discussion. The presentation is for audience members who are not experts in the particular field.

The audience will be PhD students and supervisors and the other department's staff. The PhD students are responsible for the presentation, the department organises the events. Sufficient time should be set aside to enable critical feedback and encouragement from the audience. One or two persons could possibly be asked to provide constructive criticism to the PhD student after the presentation.

Each PhD student should hold at least one presentation each year during the PhD agreement period. This is mandatory for the PhD students in the PhD programme in technology, and an especially opportunity for PhD students on other programmes to present their research topic.

All PhD students in technology participate in every PhD Forum as audience and/or speaker. PhD students that have to attend lectures, conferences etc. at the same time as a PhD Forum are excused but they have to inform the PhD administration, phd-tek@uia.no.

The PhD students have to notify the PhD administration, phd-tek@uia.no, of the title of the presentation one week before the respective PhD Forum. An email will be sent by the PhD administration as a reminder approximately two weeks before each PhD Forum to the relevant speakers.

Approximately one week before, the PhD administration will send an email with an invitation to the next PhD Forum to the department staff. The invitation will include the title of the PhD students' research presentation.

The PhD students may read the book: "E. Zanders and L. MacLeod, Presentation skills for scientists: a practical guide. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2010" to get guidelines on how to give presentations. This book may be borrowed from the University Library on Campus Grimstad.

The PhD students are free to use whatever presentation tool that is convenient to use. However, slides with "General information" and "Summary" should be included in every presentation.

Template for PhD project poster for 2011 is to be found on PhD Forum Grimstad > Presentations > Joint PhD Forum ICT and Mechatronics 2011.
