About the programme

Admission requirements

The master programme is based on a teacher training programme including mathematics OR a bachelor programme in mathematics combined with a post-graduate programme in education. Mathematics must constitute at least 80 ECTS credits of the programme. Students must have a mark of C or better in order to be admitted to the programme.

General description

The programme will suit those students who want a strong professional competence in mathematics and mathematics education. Questions related to teaching, learning and communicating mathematics at all school levels are covered in the programme. The history of mathematics, and its development, is also an important part of the programme.

Learning outcome

On successful completion of this programme the student should be able to:

• have a solid theoretical and practical knowledge in mathematics and mathematics education and be able to apply these in practice.
• develop their own ideas and implement a research based analysis of problems in mathematics education.
• evaluate their own learning and identify learning needs, communicate ideas, problems and solutions to both specialists and non-specialists.
• have a coherent and rational set of personal values relating to the social, scientific and ethical questions that arise in education.

Teaching methods

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, group work and tutorials. Research assignments comprise a significant portion of the coursework, most of which are to be completed in English. In some courses the students work with essays and more broad based projects. Students work individually on the master's thesis under the supervision of a tutor. The Master Programme in Mathematics Education requires students to stay at the University throughout the course of the programme. Most lectures and professional seminars require compulsory attendance. Please see separate course descriptions.

Evaluation methods

Assessment is based upon final written and oral examinations, and project reports. There will be final examinations in all courses. Please see separate course descriptions for more information.

Professional goal and access to further studies

The Master programme in Mathematics Education provides students with the academic foundation necessary for teaching mathematics at all school levels, from the primary up to and including the upper secondary level. It also qualifies graduates for teaching mathematics at colleges and universities.
