March 30, 2012: Scholarship for master (MSc) in mechatronics at UiA in Grimstad
Do you have a bachelor degree and want to increase your competence. The drilling division of Aker Solutions offers two scholarships for the Master degree at UiA, Grimstad. The semester begins August 2012 and is a full-time program for two years. After completion of the two year Master, the students have to work for two years at Aker Solutions (the same length as the scholarship period). The scholarship consists of 10,000 NOK per month for 10 months per year (except July and August). Does this sound interesting? February 29, 2012: Martin Choux in the Mechatronics group defends his PhD thesis at the Technical University of Denmark, see this link. Martin commenced his PhD studies in Mechatronics before UiA started its own PhD-program in this area in 2010.

February 24, 2012: New Trainee-program for newly graduated Master engineers in Mechatronics is announced, see this link. Application deadline March 15.

November 27, 2011: Experiment with a heave compensated crane and a Stewart platform for generating wave motions can be seen in this YouTube video. UiA is a partner in the research centre NORCOWE (Norwegian Research Centre for Offshore Wind Energy) and the video will be on display at EWEA Offshore 2011 in Amsterdam, November 29 to Desember 1. EWEA Offshore is the world's largest offshore wind energy event.

December 17, 2010: The Mechatronics group taught the first EVU (Continuing Education) course in Digital Control together with National Oilwell Varco, Origo Engineering and NODE NCE, see this link and this link. The course made use of the teaching facilities at National Oilwell Varco.

November 5, 2010: Bachelor and Master students in Mechatronics visited the circular platform Sevan Voyageur in Eydehavn on the dates 28/10 and 05/11. See some selected photos from the two trips by following this link.

Stewart Platform at UiA

Stewart Platform at UiA used for motion simulation.

 

October 26, 2010: A new parallel kinematic robot (a so-called Stewart Platform) is currently being installed at UiA, see video. This machine will be used to generate maritime (wave-induced) motions. Compensation equipment (both hydraulic and electrical) will be placed on top of the machine and new concepts and algorithms for wave compensation will be developed. The equipment is purchased as a part of the UiA involvement NORCOWE - Norwegian Centre for Offshore Wind Energy. The machine will form the experimental basis for many Master and PhD projects in the years to come.

September 11, 2010: Invitation to lecture series in the PhD-course MAS601 Design, Modelling and Simulation of Mechatronic Systems, 21-22 September and 5-6 October.

September 2, 2010: The companies in the NODE cluster sponser a professorship in the Mechatronics group, see this link (PDF file, 332kB) and this article in Teknisk Ukeblad (both in Norwegian).

August 3, 2010: Youtube video of one of 20 Bachelor Thesis Projects in Mechatronics during the first half of 2010. The project was a collaboration between UiA and ABB Oil & Gas in Oslo.

June 11, 2010: Norway's first Master-engineers in Mechatronics have graduated, see this internal page.

May 12, 2010: The PhD program in Mechatronics at UiA has now officially started, see this newspaper article (in Norwegian).

May 5, 2010: Aker Solutions in Kristiansand sponsors PhD position in Mechatronics at UiA.

April 7, 2010: The Engineering Conference Southern Norway is being organised for the third time on May 28 in Grimstad. This time the conference is entirely in English, with speakers from Spain, Italy and Denmark.

April 7, 2010: The Bachelor students Witold Pawlus and Jan Eivind Nielsen will publish and present a paper at the conference "the 4th European Computing Conference", Romania. Both students will travel to Bucuresti in Romania to present their work.

March 19, 2010: The students Preben Ankersen, Jan Agnar Willumsen, Geir Einar Grødem and Georg Kragseth have won an award for the best Bachelor project for 2009 by The Norwegian Society of Automatic Control. More information about the project will appear on this webpage soon. A video which shows the final product is available at YouTube.

March 5, 2010: Department of Engineering more than doubled the research production from 2008 to 2009, see this link. A further strong growth is expected in the coming years as a consequence of the new PhD program in Mechatronics.

January 15, 2010: Master thesis together with the NODE-cluster: The companies in the NODE-cluster guarantee that they will provide master thesis projects for our students. The students will then have a supervisor in a company, in addition to an academic supervisor at UiA.

January 14, 2010: The company Tellefsdal with international success: UiA congratulates the company Tellefsdal with international success for the new Quatro-snowchain. The Mechatronics group at UiA has contributed with friction testing on ice, see the news item further down from April 2, 2009.

December 28, 2009: The PhD education in Mechatronics at UiA is formally approved. The new research education program starts January 2010. UiA is currently the only Norwegian university which offers a complete education in Mechatronics from Bachelor to PhD.

December 5, 2009: NODE Mekatronikk at LinkedIn. Network for students and engineers in Southern Norway has been created.

August 7, 2009: YouTube video which shows the demonstrations of the final year (BSc) thesis projects in mechatronics at UiA.

June 29, 2009: Article about XStrata Nickel, Kristiansand and Dr Tor Anders Hauge in the magazine Automatisering, nr. 4/2009 (in Norwegian). XStrata Nickel is among the world's most efficient producers of nickel and cobolt.

June 12, 2009: The NODE cluster becomes a Norwegian Centre of Expertise (NCE). Mechatronics is one of the core focus areas in the new NCE-centre, see this article.

Tre nye næringsklynger får status som NCE

From the announcement of the three new NCE centres by the Minister for local government Magnhild Meltveit Kleppa. From UiA the Research Director Alf Holmelid, the Faculty Director Magne Aasheim Knudsen and Professor Geir Hovland were present.

BSc Prosjekt med TTS Sense
 

April 9, 2009: The students Jørgen Haaø, Trygve Bjerkholt Gjesdal and Curt Inge Eriksen describe their BSc thesis project for the company TTS Sense during the first half of 2009. The project includes design and manufacturing of a simplified mechanical model of a pipehandler as well as the programming of a control algorithm to make the machine move in a coordinated way.

April 9, 2009: The Engineering Conference Southern Norway is organised for the second time on May 6. Students and employees of UiA have free entrance. Others register via the NFA webpages.

Torstein Haga
 

April 3, 2009: Torstein Haga tells about his first year as a mechanical product engineer at Aker MH. Torstein started on the Y-path in Mechatronics in 2005 after working for 5 years as a service technician of heavy vehicles. June 2008 he completed his studies at UiA and started at Aker MH 3 weeks later after completing his Bachelor thesis in collaboration with the company Origo Enginering in Kristiansand.

Hovedprosjekt Mekatronikk 2009 - Tellefsdal
 

April 2, 2009: The Mechatronics students Jørgen Sandstad, Thorgeir Sveinsson and Audun Stea describe their thesis project for the snowchain producer Tellefsdal AS in the Gjerstad district. The thesis project involves design, dimensioning and manufacture of a hydraulically driven machine for testing of frictional properties of a new type of snowchain with square spikes.

March 31, 2009: Tilde Eidem tells about her first two years as a Mechatronics Engineer. She is currently employed as a Seismic Observer in the company Petroleum-Geo-Services (PGS).

Drill Tower

March 3, 2009: The Mechatronics group received a 5m tall model in a scale of 1:10 of a drill tower from the company PS Design AS. The model of the drill tower has previously been used at exhibitions locally in Norway and Houston in the beginning of the 90s and is now located at UiA in connection with a larger project assignment in the course MAS400 Industrial IT in the Master Mechatronics program. The drill tower has a total of 10 electrical motors which currently actuate a winch, a robot arm with 4 degrees of freedom which handles drill pipes at the lower deck, as well as a Gantry crane with 4 degrees of freedom which is placed at 3m height in the tower. The control system for the tower is based on ABB Industrial IT 800xA and the Master students will develop a complete control system for this tower, including electrical connections and the graphical operator interface. The tower will be programmed for both manual and automatic operation for drilling sequences and will also be a basis for further development and many new projects in Mechatronics (Bachelor and Master) in the years to come.
