Master in Mechatronics

The local industry needs graduates with competence at master- or PhD level. These companies work internationally and there are opportunities for international travel and career opportunities. We are currently in the process of establishing a company trainee program for recently graduated Master Mechatronics students.

A unique study programme

Already in 1989 the first mechatronics students graduated from UiA (then called Sørlandets Tekniske Skole). During the following years the bachelor study programme in mechatronics has been continuously developed in close collaboration with the regional supplier industry within oil and gas. UiA has offered a Master program in Mechatronics since August 2008, which is adapted towards this industry and which is the only of its kind in Norway. The PhD program in mechatronics officially starts early 2010, hence UiA now offers mechatronics education at all levels.

The word mechatronics is a combination of the words mechanics and electronics, and these two areas combined with modern information technology form the foundation for a wide variety of products and systems. A difference between the mechatronics study programme at UiA compared to many similar study programmes abroad is UiA's strong focus on systems with large mechanical dimensions, large forces and hydraulic components and systems. The study programme is therefore adapted towards the local supplier industry within oil and gas. This industry is world-leading in several areas, for example development of advanced robotic equipment for drilling operations, anchor systems for boats and platforms, loading and lifting equipment for the marine industry, for example ”heave-compensated” crane systems and process industry. Examples of local companies within these areas are Aker Solutions, National Oilwell, Wellquip, MacGregor Hydramarine, TTS Sense, Advanced Production and Loading, NYMO, Sevan Marine, Nexus Floating. Within the process industries we collaborate with Elkem and XStrata.

Jobs and career possibilities

We can guarantee a master thesis in one of our collaborating partner companies. Through the work with the master thesis you will work on solutions coupled to one of the products or systems in the company. The thesis work will be in close collaboration with a supervisor in the company, and often results in a job offer. The local supplier industry operate in a demanding international market, and offers jobs in many different disciplines and at many levels, in Norway and abroad. In addition to the local companies mentioned above, we can also offer student projects with other national and international companies. UiA is also a research partner in the centre NORCOWE. Within this centre it will be possible for master and PhD projects within offshore wind power. In the energy industry we collabroate with Agder Energi.

The application deadline for the 2-year programme is June 1 (for local students) and the application should be sent to Lokalt opptak UiA.

Information for international students:

• Students with a Bachelor in Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering can apply.
• The following documents must be supplied:
  • List of grades and course descriptions in English from your bachelor's degree with an official stamp from your university.
  • Confirmation of English language skills: IELTS>5.0 points OR TOEFL>500 points OR TOEFL INTERNET TEST>60 points
  • Confirmation of Norwegian language skills: Test of Norwegian (Advanced Level, Writing) > 450 points. Candidates can take the test outside of Norway, provided that a Norwegian embassy, a consulate or a university with a senior lecturer in Norwegian is willing to administer the test. • The bachelor's degree including the final thesis project must be completed in full by July 1 and all official graduation documents from your university must be received at UiA by this date.
• About 75% of the master's programme will be taught in English, the rest in Norwegian. You will be expected to speak and write some Norwegian during the 2-year master programme.
