The course provides students with an introduction to studies in political communication, linking theories of democracy and theories of public opinion to media studies, aspects of political culture and globalization.
Focusing on both domestic (Norwegian) and international perspectives, questions we raise are such as these: What characterizes the news media and their means and methods of covering politics and societal issues? How ought we to think about media power? What major changes in the development of media institutions ought we to take note of in this context? What kind of roles do the media play in opinion formation? How do political actors apply media strategies in their endeavor to influence the public? What kind of strategies and motives do the media use in their contact with actors on the local, national, international and global arenas of politics?
Examples and cases analyses will cover both domestic (Norwegian) and international issues and concerns. Lectures and course literature will be in English.
