One-year preliminary course for engineers qualify for admission to bachelor programmes in engineering and maritime education. Universities/university colleges have a special quota of student places reserved for applicant with a Pass in preliminary course, ensuring admission to engineering programmes in Norway. The university has preliminary courses in Grimstad and Kristiansand. Students may take either the complete course or parts of it, dependent of what the students needs are to qualify for admission to engineering education.
Arrangements for the recognition of prior learning are described in the information on the institution under "General arrangements for the recognition of prior learning (formal, informal and non-formal)".

The Examination Regulations of the University of Agder regulate the graduation requirements for each programme of study.
The lectures will, in addition to professional development, develop an ability to practical problem-solving, cooperation and communication. Essential teaching forms to be used, are lectures, group work, self-tuition, exercises in group and individually. Several courses have a requirement of compulsory attendance to lectures and/or exercises and portfolio products. This will be announced. It is assumed that students acquire parts of the course content on their own.
Portfolio, written and oral examination - either alone or in combination with each other.
