Student exchange

The university has for many years had substantial international cooperation, with student exchange as top priority.

The University of Agder has student exchange agreements with 150 institutions all over the world. An increasing number of Agder students choose to study abroad. In 2006, 250 students participated in student exchanges of at least three months' duration. The courses they take are approved as an integrated part of their study programmes at the University of Agder.

As part of the Quality Reform in higher education (2003), the Norwegian Parliament decided that all students accepted into degree programmes would have the offer to go abroad on exchange in the course of their studies. The university has since been working toward establishing at least one semester within each degree programme which is structured toward an exchange opportunity.

In addition, there are also good opportunities for an exchange period within non-degree study programmes. The university can in some cases also offer economic support to students who wish to take a preparatory language course before studying abroad.

The exchange period
* usually lasts between three and 10 months, but for some subjects and study programmes it is possible to take shorter practical placements abroad
* assumes that students have studied at least one year at the university or
university college level
* is academically approved ahead of time and adjusted to the students' needs
* is considered an integrated part of the students' programme and does not lead to loss of credits or study time

Exchange students can apply for support from the State Educational Loan Fund.

Students who choose to exchange with partner institutions in Scandinavia or member states of the European Union also receive a scholarship through the NORDPLUS or SOCRATES/ERASMUS education programmes.

Emphasis on internationalisation also characterises student life at the University of Agder. It is a popular destination for international students and guest lecturers, and domestic students are encouraged to participate in International Days, weekly International Pub nights, and to join the Erasmus Student Network. The Erasmus Student Network is responsible for several events with an international profile each semester.

Courses taught in English (and German)
The university introduced its first degree programmes taught entirely in English in 2005. Currently, exchange students can take up to 60 ECTS per year from a variety of courses taught in English to fit their academic needs. A complete overview of updated course offerings in languages other than Norwegian is available under study programmes. (Use the menu to the left.)

The International Education Office administers the student exchange programme and other international activities. For more information, please see Student exchange, contact the International Office at +47 38 14 10 00 or send an email to utveksling@uia.no
