The study programme has been a success both in terms of the number of students and the exam results, two important points that have made the mathematicians and scientists very happy.
"When 27 of 28 students pass their exams, the programme has clearly been a success," believes AUC professor and math enthusiast Hans Grelland .
Making math and physics less scary
The course's primus motor, Dean Morten Tveitereid, is concerned with increasing math and science skills in Norway, and this course will certainly contribute to that.
"Yes, it's high time that we make math and physics less scary. You see, math and physics are really all about everyday life," he says. After many years in the field, he understands why many of us don't. Enthusiastically and convincingly, he explains.
"The approach to the subjects is crucial to how students and pupils understand and master them. Our premise is: we are surrounded by things and use things which can be described and understood with the help of physics and mathematics. Mobile phones, cars, motorcycles, your own body, the environment you are a part of, all kinds of gadgets, economics and the universe. We say that we make mathematical models of all of this. We use equations and computer programmes with pictures and symbols. In the course of the study programme, you will also learn to make these kinds of models."
Tveiterud can't guarantee that it will all be child's play.
"But we can definitely promise you that steady work will give you results. The study programme is carefully planned and evolves steady. Step by steip, you will discover that you will master the skills. I will give you one guarantee, and that is a spot to study one of our engineering programmes if you pass the examination in "Mathematics, Science and Engineering" in the spring."
