Corn separating
Gathering all the corn from the corncob
The first day in the village we got a task to separate the corn from the maize. Usually the parents of the Kapala Desun does this job, but we got the opportunity to do this activity for a whole day. We worked first from 10.00 am to 12.00 am and then we had a lunch break to see some waterfalls. This was not far from our house and we then went back to work. It was really interesting to experience how they manage to separate the corn from the maize without out any help from a machine.
Some of us are a bit tired after gathering all the corn from the corncob, for several houers.
The maize was gathered from their own garden and then dried in the sun. After the maize was dried they separate the corn from the maize and then dried it again. After this process they sell it on the local traditional market for 1500 IDR per kilo. This is one of the tasks the parents have for their job. Our experience was that this was not an easy job. We were four people working all day and when we were finished all of us had blisters on our hands and fingers. We also had to be really patient because it takes a long time. It was fascinating to see how the mothers of the house do her their on a daily basis.
