MU-501-1 Master's Thesis - Management Project
Music Management, Master's Programme
On successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Understand arts management within a cultural management context.
- Undertake in depth analysis.
- Work independently.
- Apply basic research techniques.
- Organize the findings into a comprehensible and explicit structure.
- Critically assess the validity and general applicability of the conclusions drawn.
The study programme coordinator will discuss and choose the supervisor(s) together with the students. All students are obliged to have at least one in-house supervisor. According to the scope of the thesis and the interests of the students, two students may work together in a group.
During the first semester the students will have the opportunity of having consultations on a general level. The teachers in the master´s team will provide such consultations. The programme will also have excursions and meetings with businesses, entrepreneurs and employees in the field.
The annual conference "The Challenge of the New", which is arranged by the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Agder, is an example of a relevant academic event, benefitial for the students, both in terms of learning and networking with key industrial decision-makers. This event gathers decision makers from the international music industry in order to discuss the development of the industry from a political and economical perspective.
The students will also gain experience through writing texts in different genres.
Supervised by a University of Agder faculty member and a potential mentor from the music industry, the Management project is probably one of the most rewarding and empowering experiences of the entire programme. Each student in consultation with the module leaders and/or relevant industry representatives chooses the subject area for research where appropriate. The subject must address current music or other creative business issues and concerns, and should incorporate relevant business theories, academic research design, and critical analysis. The Management project is the capstone of the learning in the programme and builds on the skills and experience derived from the previous modules. It provides students with the opportunity to apply programme knowledge into a major project and add to the body of professional practice and theoretical literature.
The course makes use of individual supervision and independent work.
