SE-502-1 Personnel Economics
Økonomi og administrasjon - Siviløkonom, masterprogram , Økonomi og administrasjon - Siviløkonom, 5-årig masterprogram
Upon successful completion of this course the student should have developed new skills in response to emerging knowledge of human resources management and economics. The student should be able to use highly specialised theoretical concepts and analytical tools of modern labour economics. They should also be able to create a research-based diagnosis to the business decisions about pay and incentive systems, and hiring, training and firing of different types of personnel, and besides they will respond to social, scientific and ethical issues that are encountered in these decisions.
The approach makes a bridge from labour economics research to personnel economics.
Issues covered: Labour supply, reservation wage, full-time versus part-time work (household production and the life-cycle) and investment in education. Labour demand in the short run and long run, recruitment, training, promotion and firing. Worker compensation: pay, fringe benefits, productivity measuring and incentive pay. International variation in employment protection legislation leading to international variation in employment contracts and business practices. Throughout the course, we emphasize theoretical and empirical approaches and maintain a pronounced international perspective.
2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of student presentations/discussions per week. The working language is English.
Approved assignments. Further information will be given in Fronter at the start of the semester.
